Pablo Paredes, the 23-year-old Navy sailor who refused to board a Persian Gulf-bound ship due to his opposition to the war in Iraq, was convicted Wednesday of missing his ship's movement.
A judge at Naval Station San Diego dismissed a lesser charge of unauthorized absence against him.
A sentencing phase is under way, said Navy officials. Paredes could face a year in confinement and receive a bad conduct discharge for his refusal to board the USS Bonhomme Richard on Dec. 6. Lesser punishments could include a dishonorable discharge or reduction in rank and pay.
