Canada praised for aiding war resisters

TORONTO -- Canada has a proud and courageous history of providing refuge to American war resisters and should remember that now as a new generation of protesters arrives at its borders, U.S. peace activist Ron Kovic said yesterday.

Kovic, a Vietnam war veteran who became a leader of the anti-war movement in the '60s, condemned the current Iraqi war as "illegal and immoral policy" and praised Canadians who have helped today's war dodgers.

"I want to remind you of your proud history, of your moral past, of your courageous history," Kovic told roughly 100 anti-war supporters gathered for a panel discussion in a dingy Toronto meeting hall.

"Your beautiful country saved lives," he said in a phone-in address from California.
