Iraq abuse soldiers guilty

Two British soldiers were found guilty yesterday of involvement in abuse of Iraqi civilians that culminated in a sex show during which captured looters were photographed being forced to simulate sexual acts.

Cpl Daniel Kenyon, 33, and L/Cpl Mark Cooley, 25, both from Newcastle and members of 1 Bn the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, will be sentenced tomorrow.

The men, convicted at a court martial in Osnabruck, north-west Germany, could be stripped of their rank, jailed for up to two years and dishonourably discharged from the Army.

L/Cpl Darren Larkin, 30, from Oldham, Lancs, who admitted assaulting an Iraqi by standing on him, faces being stripped of his rank, discharged in disgrace and sentenced to up to six months in prison.

But the failure of the 20-month investigation and two courts martial to find and punish anyone who forced the Iraqis to simulate sexual acts is expected to lead to criticism.

There is also likely to be anger that none of the officers involved in the illegal operation to capture looters and "give them a hard time" faced any charges and that all have since been promoted.

The disquiet will be compounded by the inability of the military police to find the Iraqis involved so that the full extent of who was to blame could be properly investigated.
