RSF to honor blogs

Watchdog to honor blogs for press freedom

Jan 31, 2005

International press freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is seeking nominations for the best blogs promoting and defending freedom of expression.

The blog – short for Weblog – is a Web site on which news and commentary is posted in chronological order, with the latest information at the top. The medium’s popularity has grown rapidly in recent years, in both the developed and developing worlds.

In countries where governments curtail or punish critical viewpoints, bloggers have become targets. The Chinese and Iranian governments are among those who routinely arrest people who express themselves online. Often the bloggers themselves become vocal advocates for free expression.

RSF says it is looking for the best examples of blogs that defend free expression and press freedom. Later, visitors to the RSF Web site will vote on the winner.

Nominated sites can be in any language, and should be operated by one person or a small number of people. Those created by governments or NGOs are not eligible. The site should be updated regularly and be at least six months old. Its author need not be a professional journalist, but blogs by professionals are eligible.

To nominate a blog, contact internet@rsf.org.
